A Promise to a Daughter
In the early 1930s, a Seattle man named Boyce Luther Gulley was diagnosed with tuberculosis. Believing he didn't have much time left, he left Washington and traveled to the Arizona desert in search of a warmer, drier climate.
Before leaving, he reportedly promised his young daughter that one day he would build her a castle.
Settling near South Mountain, Gulley spent the next several years turning that promise into reality.
Working largely by himself, he gathered whatever materials he could find and began constructing an extraordinary home unlike anything Phoenix had ever seen.
Built from Whatever Was Available
Mystery Castle wasn't built with conventional building supplies.
Instead, Gulley used native stone, adobe, railroad rails, automobile parts, telephone poles, old glass, and countless recycled materials he collected from around the Valley.
The result was a one-of-a-kind structure featuring:

Multiple fireplaces
Hidden passageways
Rooftop terraces
Arched windows
Handcrafted details throughout
Every room has its own personality, making the castle feel more like an evolving work of art than a traditional home.
A Surprise Waiting in Arizona
When Gulley died in 1945, his wife and daughter had no idea he had spent years building a castle in the Arizona desert.
Only after his death did they travel to Phoenix and discover the incredible home waiting for them.
His daughter, Mary Lou Gulley, eventually made the castle her home and spent decades sharing its story with visitors from around the world.
Her guided tours became almost as famous as the castle itself.
A Phoenix Landmark
Today, Mystery Castle remains one of Phoenix's most beloved historic attractions.
Nestled against the rugged slopes of South Mountain, it offers visitors a glimpse into a different era of Arizona, when creativity, determination, and a little bit of desert ingenuity could produce something truly unforgettable.
