Long before Arizona became known for retirement communities, spring training, or explosive population growth, the state built its identity on one thing buried deep underground: copper.
In fact, Arizona once supplied the majority of America’s copper, helping power the country’s industrial growth during the late 1800s and early 1900s. The metal became so important to the state’s economy and identity that Arizona is still known today as the “Copper State.”
Even the copper-colored star on the Arizona state flag is a tribute to the industry that helped shape modern Arizona.

A simple Facebook post sparked a meaningful act of generosity from members of the Sun City Leather Club, leading to the creation of new opportunities for students in Wickenburg.
After reading about Wickenburg High School teacher Miss Matarozzo’s efforts to gather supplies for a new leather crafting program, club member Lisa Wedekind-Rakoz brought the idea to her fellow leathercrafters. Inspired by the initiative, club members quickly rallied together, donating their own duplicate tools and extra materials to support the budding program.
Over the course of three weeks, donations steadily poured in, with the Sun City Leather Club serving as a staging area for the growing collection of supplies.
On April 21, Lisa, along with fellow members Mona Loniewski, Bobby Monares, and John Lamberton, traveled to Wickenburg to personally deliver the items. While there, they were given a tour of what will soon become the Wickenburg Leather Shop and had the opportunity to meet student Megan, whose passion and vision are driving the program forward with strong guidance from Miss Matarozzo.
Both the students and teacher expressed deep appreciation for the contributions, which will play a key role in introducing leather crafting skills into the classroom.
The visit concluded on a warm and collaborative note, as the group shared lunch together and exchanged ideas, stories, and techniques—truly “talking shop” in the spirit of craftsmanship and community.
What began as a social media post has now grown into a partnership rooted in generosity, creativity, and the passing down of a timeless trade to the next generation.
Sun City Leather Club is located at the Lakeview Rec Center, 10626 Thunderbird Blvd, Room 213. Stop by to visit and see the beautiful leather items our members have created.
